Micro-Hydro Turbine Prototype

Turbine prototype (DN 63 pipe assembly) for energy harvesting from water distribution networks, developed through 3D modeling, CFD simulation and experimental verification.

Manufacturer

LEEC

Model

DN 63

Location

LEEC Laboratory

Technical Specifications

  • DN 63 pipe assembly, max output 192 mW at 2.6 kg/s

Usage & Applications

  • Energy harvesting from water distribution networks (micro hydropower).
  • Laboratory testing of turbine performance vs flow rate and load resistance.
  • Recovery of energy dissipated in break pressure tanks and pressure reducing valves.
  • Feasibility studies for the Buea water distribution network (18 potential sites, ≈ 976.21 MWh/year).

Test procedure:

1. Set the flow rate on the test bench (1.1 – 2.6 kg/s range). 2. Vary load resistance (0 – 400 Ω) and record output power. 3. Compare with CFD simulation predictions. 4. Max observed output: 192 mW at 2.6 kg/s / 106 Ω.
